The Philosophy

Why Feed Raw?

Because nature knows best. Our raw food preserves the natural enzymes, vitamins, and nutrients that cooking destroys.

**What do dogs eat in nature?** Although we cannot copy the footprint of mother nature, we can surely mimic what dogs and cats were designed to eat naturally by providing for them a biologically appropriate meal that allows their systems to work effectively. This approach helps build their immune system through a diet that puts very little stress on the body, ultimately protecting them from degenerative diseases and other health complications associated with poor nutrition. We can accomplish this by consuming various fresh foods ourselves — and for our pets. Technically, our domesticated dogs and cats may or may not differ from their wild counterparts in many ways, as science has tried to prove, but their dentition and digestive system have in essence remained unchanged. Domesticating them and feeding what we have been accustomed to eating in no way means that just because their bodies can utilize some of the nutrients from the food being fed, it is the appropriate nutrition for them. Therefore, feeding a species-appropriate raw food should be the first choice of nutrition for cats and dogs. It is also imperative to remember that feeding pets this way is not re-inventing the wheel, but rather returning to how they should have been eating in the first place.

How It Works

All meat proteins in our finely ground meals are sourced from Beef, Chicken, Ostrich, Duck, Fish and Game. These are combined with vegetables, fruit and herbs. Upon the advice of our nutritionist, we have included and approved vitamins and minerals to close the gap of nutrients that may have been lost during the production process. Combining a wider range of ingredients improves the nutritional benefit and integrity of the product as a complete and balanced meal.

Is Your Dog at a Healthy Weight?

Use this visual guide to assess your dog's body condition and adjust their portions accordingly.

Underweight dog body condition

Too Skinny

Ribs, spine and pelvic bones easily visible. Increase food portions gradually.

Feed 3% of body weight

Healthy weight dog body condition

Just Right

Clear waist line from top view and tucked belly from side view. Last ribs may be visible.

Maintain 2.5% of body weight

Overweight dog body condition

Rounded

Difficult to feel ribs, waistline fading. Abdomen not tucked but more straight across.

Reduce to 2% of body weight

Obese dog body condition

Obese

No visible waist line, hanging or bulging belly. Immediate portion reduction needed.

Feed 1.5-2% of body weight

Body Condition Scoring

Understanding the Body Conditioning Scale

The Body Conditioning Scale is a 9-point system used to assess whether your dog is at a healthy weight. It's more reliable than the scale because it looks at actual body composition, not just pounds.

The 9-Point Scale

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Too Skinny Ideal Too Heavy
1-2 Very Underweight
3 Underweight
4 Lean
5 Ideal
6 Slightly Overweight
7 Overweight
8-9 Obese
3

Underweight Zone

A dog at a 3 on the scale is underweight. You can see their ribs, spine, and hip bones clearly. They need more food — increase portions to 3% of body weight to help them gain weight gradually.

7

Overweight Zone

A dog at a 7 on the scale is overweight. You can't easily feel their ribs, and they lack a visible waistline. Reduce portions to 2% of body weight to help them slim down to a healthy 4-5 range.

5

Target: The Ideal Range (4-5)

Aim for your dog to be in the 4-5 range — this is where they are healthiest, most energetic, and at lower risk for weight-related health issues.

Fluffy Breeds: Get Hands-On!

For fluffy breeds like Huskies, Malamutes, Samoyeds, or Pomeranians, visual assessment can be misleading. Their thick coats hide their true body condition. You MUST get your hands on them — run your fingers along their ribcage, feel their spine, and check their waistline by touch. Don't trust your eyes alone!

Weekly Measurements

To accurately track your dog's condition: measure their neck, chest (at the widest part behind the front legs), and waist (at the narrowest part in front of the hips) weekly. Record these measurements along with your photo diary. This is especially important for breeds prone to weight gain or those with heavy coats.

Raw Feeding Education

Feeding Tips & Guides

Learn everything you need to know about feeding your pets a raw, natural diet.

Important Feeding Tips

Why might the feeding calculator be inaccurate? Your pet may not be the 'average, middle of the road' animal. Every dog is unique — breed, age, activity level, and metabolism all play a role. Expect to make periodic changes to find the sweet spot that works best for your pet.

Please do not be surprised if you find yourself needing to alter your pet's feeding amount once they are on their new diet — this is a common occurrence. Weight fluctuations can happen as their body adjusts.

Do not fret though — if you find your pet is closer to a 3 or 7 on the body condition scale, now is the perfect time to start dialing in their nutrition to get them back to where they should be.

If your pet is experiencing significant weight fluctuations or health concerns, please consult with your veterinarian.

The weight chart above is based on the maximum recommended portions and represents our experience. Some dogs thrive on slightly less food.

You are going to have to actively monitor your pet until you find a good balance.

For example, my 12-year-old, 40kg Husky/Malamute mix is low energy and should be eating 770g per day according to the chart. However, he now only has 500g per day, fed once daily. He does have hungry days, and I give him a little extra when he's having one of those days. If he leaves food in his bowl, then I know he is satisfied.

Your dog might not stop when they are satisfied. Please keep your dog's temperament in mind and stick to the feeding guidelines if your dog doesn't know when to stop.

Treats & Adjustments

The weight chart includes treats too. If you give your dogs treats or meaty chews, please factor that into the food allocation for that day.

For example: if you give your dog 500g per day but you add a 50g chicken neck, then it would be better to remove 50g raw food from their meal.

In winter you might notice your dog needs a little more food as they are now burning more fuel for warmth — adjust accordingly.

NB!

Overfeeding your dogs can hurt them.

Feeding Raw Bones

Raw meaty bones are nature's toothbrush for dogs. Understanding how to feed bones safely is essential for your pet's dental and nutritional health.

Raw bones are softer than cooked bones and can be safely consumed by your dog. Once you cook a bone it becomes hard and splintered, making it dangerous. Bones are not only good for cleaning teeth but also serve as a meal replacement — they contain meat, cartilage, and nutrients your dog needs.

Safe Bone Options

These bones are safe for your dog to consume when fed raw:

  • Chicken bones (soft when raw)
  • Duck bones (soft when raw)
  • Pork bones (give 2-4 times a month)
  • Raw meaty bones with plenty of meat attached
⚠ Never feed cooked bones of any kind — they become brittle and can splinter, causing serious injury.

How Often to Feed Bones

  • Pork bones can be given 2-4 times a month
  • Chicken and duck bones are soft enough to feed more regularly as part of a balanced diet
  • Bones can serve as a complete meal replacement since they contain meat and nutrients

Why Bones Matter

  • Natural teeth cleaning action — bones scrape away plaque and tartar
  • Source of calcium and phosphorus for strong bones
  • Mental stimulation and enrichment
  • Satisfies natural chewing instinct
  • Complete meal replacement with meat and nutrients
💡

Pellets and kibble do NOT clean teeth. Only raw bones provide the natural scraping action that keeps teeth clean and gums healthy.

Safety Reminders

Only feed RAW bones — never cooked
Supervise your dog when feeding bones
Choose appropriate size bones for your dog's size
Remove small pieces that could be swallowed whole

Food Sensitivities

Understanding food sensitivities can help you choose the right proteins for your dog's unique needs.

We cannot guarantee that your pet will like or eat our product. We are here to assist with the transition from pellets to raw food. Please note that perseverance and persuasion will be required.

Important Notice

It is imperative to understand that we cannot guarantee that your pet will like or eat our product. Doggobone does not take ownership of your dog's reaction to the diet; this lies solely in the hands of the dog owner. Furthermore, please note that your pet's diet prior to attempting the raw diet will greatly influence the successful transition.

If your pet does not eat the food, we suggest you donate the food to a dog shelter near you. Although our suppliers endeavour to achieve consistency in the product, the use of natural ingredients will influence the colour, texture, and consistency of every batch, and your pet may or may not like certain batches.

The Detoxification Process

When converting a pet to a raw diet, detoxification may occur. Detoxification is the process where the cells of the body release toxins that have accumulated over the years. Our pets are exposed to toxins on a regular basis, including garden pesticides and detergents — these toxins are stored in the cells of the body.

Common Detox Symptoms
  • Discharge from eyes, ears, nose
  • Excessive wax build-up in the ears
  • Persistent scratching and biting themselves
  • Excessive loose stool or mucus
What to Expect

As soon as the body is capable of eliminating these toxins, it will do so. The length of time it takes will depend on the pet, its age, and toxin build-up. The pet may need extra help through this process, and we are here to assist.

Feeding Guide

How Much Should I Feed My Dog?

Feeding amounts vary depending on several factors unique to your pet.

Feed daily 2.5% of the dog's ideal body mass until you find a good balance.

Breed Size

On average, small dogs require more calories per pound than medium and large breed dogs (with Great Danes being an exception — often require up to 20% more calories than other breeds in their size class).

Lifestage

Young adults often require more calories than middle-aged pets and seniors (there are always exceptions).

Activity Level

The average pet who receives two walks per day will require less calories than your average working dog or competition dog, even if they are the same breed.

Neuter Status

Intact pets appear to burn more calories at rest than their altered counterparts.

Comprehensive feeding guide chart showing daily portions for different dog sizes and life stages

My Dog is a Gulper

Doggobone is designed with your gulper in mind. We crush the meat and bone into tiny pieces, making it safe for dogs who tend to swallow their food whole. This eliminates the risk of choking on large bone pieces while still providing all the nutritional benefits.

Slow Feeding Tips

  • Use a slow feeding bowl to make your dog work for their food
  • Add a tennis ball to their bowl — they'll have to move it around to get to the food
  • Feed smaller portions more frequently
  • Scatter the food on a flat surface or snuffle mat

Puppy Feeding Schedule

Puppies are very complicated to feed raw due to their calcium and phosphorus requirements. Doggobone has been approved as balanced for all stages of a dog's life, including puppies. Split the required meal for puppies into 3 meals per day up to 6 months.

  • Between 4 months and 9 months: feed 8% of body mass taken once a week
  • Between 9 months and 12 months: feed 6% of body mass taken once a week
  • Between 12 months and 18 months: feed 5% of body mass taken once a week
  • Between 18 months and 24 months: feed 4% of body mass taken once a week
  • Between 24 months and over: feed 3% of body mass taken once a week

Other Foods to Feed to Puppies

  • Goats milk
  • Full cream yogurt
  • Tripe
  • Coconut oil
  • Pork bones (raw only)

Important Notes

  • Use an accurate kitchen scale to weigh out your pup's food
  • The % is a guide only — some puppies naturally eat less than others
  • Puppies will naturally eat less as they get older
  • You are going to have to actively monitor your pet until you find a good balance

Fasting Schedule

Doggobone recommends a 6-day feeding schedule with a day of fasting on the 7th. Fasting is an age-old practice that has been known to aid digestion and help cleanse the body of toxins. It is not uncommon for animals in the wild to fast.

Benefits of Fasting

  • Gives the digestive system a rest
  • Allows the body to detoxify and cleanse
  • Promotes better gut health
  • Mimics natural feeding patterns
  • Clears infections and repairs overworked cells
  • Breaks down and dissolves wastes and poisons within the body
Note:

It is not advisable to fast puppies under the age of 6 months. For those concerned, feed plain yogurt as the alternative to food.

Getting Started

Transitioning from Pellets to Raw

Two approaches to help your pet switch from processed food to a natural raw diet.

Rapid Switch

Suitable for healthy pets with strong immune systems. An immediate conversion can be done safely.

On the first day, fast your pet for 24 hours to allow the body to cleanse itself of toxins and to make your pet eager for their next day's meal.

Normal detoxification may cause temporary symptoms of vomiting or diarrhea — this will differ from animal to animal. There is no need to be alarmed if these symptoms occur, as your pet's digestive system gets used to the change. This may also be the result of eating too fast, gulping, or possible temperature variations.

Slow Switch

Strongly recommended for pets with compromised immune systems or sensitivity to dramatic changes in diets.

This method is introduced slowly to prevent major detoxification symptoms. The raw diet should be introduced slowly to allow the body to cleanse itself of toxins and get your pet eager for raw.

Day 1

Fasting is recommended to allow the body to cleanse itself of toxins and get your pet eager for raw.

Day 2

Start out with 10% raw diet and 90% of the old diet. Because the digestion time is different for processed diets and raw diets, we suggest that you separate the feedings and feed the raw in the morning and the kibble at night.

Days 3-10

Increase the raw diet each day by 10% and decrease the old diet by 10% for the next 9 days.

Day 11

You should be feeding only the RAW DIET.

Transition Tips

  • Mixing proteins: At a minimum, a raw diet should consist of 3 protein sources and 50% of the diet should be from red meat
  • Rotate proteins to prevent developing a protein allergy
  • Doggobone recommends feeding Kefir/greek yoghurt for healthy digestive enzymes
  • We recommend feeding twice a day to prevent hunger anxiety
  • Never heat or cook any of our products
  • Doggobone is VET recommended
  • Products hold a 6-month shelf life (frozen)

How to Handle Raw for Cats

Just like with dogs, raw cat food requires proper handling to ensure safety for both you and your feline friend.

Keep food frozen until ready to use — thaw only what you need
Thaw in the refrigerator, not on the counter
Serve in a stainless steel or ceramic bowl (never plastic)
Wash hands thoroughly before and after handling
Clean and disinfect bowls after each feeding
Don't leave raw food out for more than 30 minutes
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 48 hours
Never re-freeze thawed food

Tip: Cats are more sensitive to food temperature than dogs. Room temperature food is ideal — not too cold from the fridge.

Cats are extremely fussy and most older cats will not take to raw food immediately. If you wish to proceed, we recommend slowly weaning the food being digested differently by the body.

All meat is human grade, but due to the bone content, the food is not suitable for human consumption.

Transitioning Your Cat to Raw

Similar rules apply for cats when transitioning them to a raw diet. Cats get fixated on the food they are being fed and it will take much longer for them to accept a new diet. Extra patience on the part of the 'pet parent' is vital during this phase, which can take anything from 3 days to 9 months. It is not recommended to fast your cat for more than 12 hours.

Safety First

How to Handle Raw Food

Important safety guidelines for storing, preparing, and serving raw pet food.

It is important to treat raw pet food in the same manner that you would handle raw meat.

Keep Food Frozen

Keep food frozen until ready to use and defrost only the required amount.

Remove From Packaging

Remove product contents from packaging before thawing, eliminating microplastics in the food.

Cut Packaging Carefully

Use a sharp cutting tool and carefully cut along the length of the packaging.

Thaw Overnight in Fridge

Thaw overnight in the refrigerator in a sealed container.

Don't Leave Out All Day

Please do not leave the food out all day — the food will spoil.

Hygiene is Key

Hygiene is key to working with raw food! Treat raw food in the same manner you treat your raw meat.

Separate Preparation Area

You can use a separate preparation area for raw food handling.

Clean & Disinfect

Clean and disinfect surfaces and equipment before and after preparing raw pet food.

Wash Your Hands

Wash your hands thoroughly before and after preparing raw pet food.

Weigh Portions

Weigh out the portion of food using a scale for accurate feeding.

Use Proper Bowls

Always feed your pet from a stainless steel or ceramic bowl. DO NOT use plastic bowls as they are porous and can harbour bacteria.

Don't Waste the Juice

Do not discard thawed juice — discarding the juice may lead to a nutritional imbalance. Mix it back into the food.

Ensure Food is Eaten

Make sure your dog eats all of the raw food. If you leave it in the bowl it will attract flies and ants — this is where it gets dangerous.

Store Leftovers Properly

If your dog does not eat all their food, cover the bowl with wrap or transfer to another container and place it in the fridge for the next feeding.

Wash Bowls Daily

Wash your dog's bowls with soap and water after each use.

Rinse Packaging

Rinse the plastic packaging bag before recycling or throwing it away — this helps prevent flies and ants.

Store Leftovers Airtight

Keep any leftover dog food in an airtight glass container in the refrigerator. The raw food will maintain its quality and freshness for up to 48 hours.

Never Re-freeze

Do not re-freeze. Feed unused food within 3 days of thawing in the refrigerator.

Fresh Water Daily

Please always make sure your pet has access to clean water daily.

For Small Dogs

For small dogs, you can cut the frozen sausages into the correct sizes, wrap them in cling wrap and return them to the freezer until you need them.

Safety Guaranteed

Following these guidelines ensures your pet receives all the nutritional benefits of raw food while keeping your family safe from potential bacteria.
